Cruel Moon
Album - Country, Music, Rock, Southern Rock, Americana, Urban Cowboy, Contemporary Country
Buddy Miller’s feel for traditional country is downright scary — and that’s meant in both senses of the phrase. His grip on old-time musical idioms is sure; his songs are infused with a sense of danger. Cruel Moon is an intimate journey into damaged love and looming betrayal. Miller’s voice embodies the high ‘n’ lonesome essence of country’s origins, while his writing distills tears and anger into a potent brew. Songs like “Somewhere Trouble Don’t Go,” “Does My Ring Burn Your Finger” and “Lookin’ for a Heartache Like You” seethe with obsessive desire, driven home by spiky guitar lines and hard-slapping drum work. The album’s slower tunes — especially the title track and “In Memory of My Heart” — have the grand desolation of ancient ballads. The covers — Gene Pitney’s “I’m Gonna Be Strong” and Pop Staples’ “It’s Been a Change” — are unlikely but inspired choices. Miller’s superb support cast includes guest vocalist Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle, as well as wife Julie. If you’re looking for the safer side of country, approach Cruel Moon with caution. These songs could keep you awake all night.
