A Quiet Divide
Album - Electronic, Music
He's composed soundtracks for films such as Stray, Belief: The Possession of Janet Moses, and We Are Stars. And he's undertaken ambitious projects like using immersive projection-mapping to turn the Auckland War Memorial Museum into an iceberg (Antarctica: While You Were Sleeping). So one might think that ambient/post-rock artist Rhian Sheehan would want to dial it back for his first studio album in five years. No chance. All that mind-expanding work has added to his already impressive skill set, making A Quiet Divide his most cinematic album to date. He leans heavily on classical—piano and strings lend tension and grandeur to songs like “Someplace,” “The Absence of You,” and “Lost Letters.” Electronic murmurs weave in and out of “All Who Remain” and “Atlas,” widening his lens of possibilities. “We Danced Under a Broken Sky” concludes with a passage of cataclysmic rock that would make shoegaze fans' ears perk up.
