While “Impressions“ is also the title of a John Coltrane composition, Chris Botti’s ninth studio album is an unofficial homage to the saxophone titan’s former boss Miles Davis. As a 12-year-old, Botti was inspired to study and play jazz after hearing a Davis recording of “My Funny Valentine.” Here, the Oregon native performs two numbers popularized by the trumpet legend, plus Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo’s “En Aranjuez con tu Amor” and the Gershwins’ “Summertime,” featuring David Foster on piano. The opening track is an ambitious take on Chopin’s “Prelude No. 20 in C Minor” backed by a jazz rhythm section and orchestra. Botti also collaborates with piano great Herbie Hancock (a member of Davis’ "second great quintet") to write and perform the ambitious “Tango Suite.”
