The inventive LA singer-songwriter moves beyond sierreño. Barely into his twenties, Julio Caesar continues to seize upon the momentum sparked by his breakout fave “Ojitos Rojos.” As with his 2025 project Enero, this follow-up from the inventive Los Angeles-raised singer-songwriter draws upon a handful of styles that collectively result in a rather unique representation of música mexicana. Throughout PROYECTANDO, he shows off his proficiency as an artist with sincere cuts like “demente” and “réplica,” each one underpinned by his skillful use of the bajo quinto. His meaningful sierreño moments here, such as the pleading pair “chicago” and “regalametutiempo,” are matched by even more ingenious interpretations of the sound, like the sorrow-drowning centerpiece “algo cambió” and the sonically expansive “despacito” with guests EddyJae and Dariell Cano. On the claustrophobically minimalist “punchbowl,” he relatably struggles with a breakup by vacillating between grudging acceptance and a desperate hope for reconciliation. A low, percussive pulse adds weight to late highlight “duele lo que va pasar,” which bursts into an electro-pop standout.
