Album - Alternative, Music, Rock
Brooklyn’s Shark? is unlike most bands in its corner of New York City. It isn't artsy or coy or infatuated with the 1880s or the 1980s. Shark? plays aggressive rock ‘n’ roll that shades toward the pop-punk side in the sense that the band never forgets to write a hook. Here, the first eight songs blast off without a second thought. (The ninth and final track includes a jangly midtempo song that flows for five minutes before a dull and noisy drums-and-feedback experiment ends the album.) Songs like the smart-lipped title track and the enthrallingly bitter “California Grrls" (where the singer has apparently gone through a horrible breakup) teem with punk energy and pop precision. “I hate California girls; they don’t believe in nothing” comes from the chorus, which sounds like Iggy Pop fronting a post–Raw Power band. Guitars turn nastier for the minute and a half of “I Know You Love Me Now.” The bass guitar powers the feral “This Is Living.” For an album that lasts about 25 minutes (not counting the final feedback), there's not a wasted note.
