As leader of the Only Ones in the late '70s, Peter Perrett's instantly recognizable vocals, which blend world-weary languor with sarcastic bite, and heart-on-sleeve romantic songs (like the classic "Another Girl, Another Planet") made him one of the more compelling songwriters of the era. After the band split in 1981, Perrett struggled through years of drug abuse and a stop-start musical career that included the 1996 album Woke Up Sticky before rebounding strongly with a trio of albums made for Domino Records -- most notably 2024's equally harrowing and uplifting The Cleansing -- which showed that despite time and travail, his skills as an incisive songwriter or expressive singer had not diminished.
