An adventurous figure in jazz, sax player Sam Morrison's projects have taken him through the experimentation of open-ended improvisation, the intelligent cool of fusion, and the brave new world of electronics and funk. His big break came when he was tapped to join Miles Davis' band, though bad timing saw Davis going on hiatus the same year. Morrison launched a career as a bandleader with a pair of intelligent fusion projects, 1976's Dune and 1977's Natural Layers, before he took time off to focus on his family. He made a bold return to the spotlight with 2025's Cosmic Trip, putting his sax alongside Bill Laswell's electronic accompaniment.
