An inventive vibraphonist, Stefon Harris balances his love of hard bop with contemporary jazz, fusion, funk, hip-hop, and Latin grooves. After coming to New York, Harris became a first-call sideman, working with Terell Stafford, Steve Turre, and Joe Henderson. On Blue Note, he released a series of acclaimed leader albums, including 1998's A Cloud of Red Dust and 1999's Grammy-nominated Black Action Figure. Though influenced by Milt Jackson and Bobby Hutcherson, Harris carved out his own place with the adventurous Stefon Harris & Blackout on 2004's R&B-tinged Evolution and 2008's Urbanus. 2011's Latin-infused Ninety Miles showcased a different band that included Christian Scott and David Sanchez. Following 2012's Ninety Miles: Live at Cubadisco, he stepped away to focus on work as an educator. Harris & Blackout returned in 2018 with Sonic Creed. Sonic Creed, Vol. 2: Life Signs appeared in 2024 and was followed by Legacy Dances in 2026.
