Tennessee pianist Beegie Adair didn’t release her first jazz album until 1991, when she was in her mid-50s. But she was already a seasoned musician by then, spending previous decades as a successful studio player in Nashville, working with the likes of Dolly Parton and Chet Atkins. Adair deploys a mainstream aesthetic in her measured swing sensibility and lyric improvisations. She’s used her albums to salute composers like Duke Ellington and Richard Rodgers and honor singers like Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra, but regardless of what she’s interpreting, there’s a sleek, graceful elegance to each performance.
