Boasting a shadowy boom of a voice and distant blood relations to folk hero Davy Crockett, Americana songwriter Charley Crockett might’ve been destined to add to his country’s legacy of myth. Born in Texas in 1984, he’s worked at a furious clip since his 2015 full-length debut, A Stolen Jewel. In 2018, Lonesome as a Shadow drew on most of his major influences, including blues, folk, soul, gospel, and brass band music; while 2019’s The Valley leaned heavily into country. Along the way, he’s released a steady series of covers records, and in 2022 he put out The Man from Waco, a collection of cinematic roots tunes that tells the story of a man fleeing the consequences of an accidental murder.
