Steeped in sugary sophistication, Motown's definitive girl group elevated everyday romance to soaring drama. The Supremes thrived on Diana Ross' velvety, pleading turns as lead singer, buoyed by Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson's immaculate harmonizing. Starting with 1964's “Where Did Our Love Go,” the trio embarked on a dream run of era-defining hits, graduating from snappy soul to string-swept pop (“I Hear a Symphony”) and bold social messages (“Love Child”). The group continued after Ross went solo in 1970, with new recruit Jean Terrell stepping up for the dark yet hopeful “Stoned Love,” then finally disbanded following further personnel changes once Wilson departed in 1977. Ballard passed away in 1976, and Wilson in 2021.
