The post-metal term is a little misleading. After all, metal isn’t dead. But by the early ‘90s, bands like Neurosis, Melvins, and TOOL had taken the basic tenets of the genre—distorted guitars, bludgeoning riffs, dark lyrics—and created something new by incorporating sounds and ideas from punk, psychedelia, and noise rock. They also slowed the breakneck pace of ‘80s thrash and ‘90s death metal down to a churning, often hypnotic tempo. The bands that followed—ISIS, Boris, Deafheaven—continued to expand the parameters of the genre by infusing their music with shoegaze, black metal, and experimental elements.
