Sinaloan singer/songwriter Ulices Chaidez was only 16 when his pugilistic debut single, "Andamos En El Ruedo" (We're in the Ring), topped Mexican regional charts in 2016. Part of the genre's "new generation," Chaidez and his band the Plebes work a relatively rustic country-invoking sound inspired by Ariel Camacho, who died in 2015 at age 22. While Camacho was best known for his narcocorridos, Chaidez's stripped-down trio of guitar, 12-string guitar, and sousaphone focus on romantic dance music performed with exquisite sensitivity.
