Those stumbling upon the swirling baroque-pop sounds of The Cymbal Crashing Clouds might mistake it for a lost Brian Wilson/Van Dyke Parks collaboration. It’s actually the work of singer/songwriter Ben Shive, who’s mostly known in the Christian music world but deserves mainstream discovery. On his sophomore album, he reveals himself as a composer of formidable melodic gifts and a lyricist of appealing wit. Quirky touches abound, such as the pizzicato strings in “Shooting the Moon” and the railroad train sample running though “Listen!” A wry glimpse back at early piano lessons (“EGBDF”) and a sweetly awkward love ode (“She’s Invisible”) are likewise playful in spirit. But Shive reaches beyond whimsy in songs like “The Fire Pit” (a parable of pain and innocence) and “A Last Time for Everything” (an unflinching look at mortality). Tracks like “Your Secret Smile” and “The Fall” are sure to appeal to those who revere The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds and Smile.
