Spiritualize
Album - Pop, Music, Rock
Katrina Leskanich, the former lead singer of Katrina and the Waves, the ‘80s power-pop band who scored with the hit, “Walking On Sunshine,” has made several endearing solo albums. This latest seven-song collection moves away from guitar-based power-pop and settles on a glossy keyboard mix that is redolent of ‘80s power ballads. The songs are all, as the album title suggests, spiritually based. They have that inspirational sound where the melodies all move heavenward and Leskanich’s vocals fall somewhere between a gospel singer and Peter Cetera. Leskanich’s voice is in fine shape as she lets fly far more than she did with her band. “There Is a Light” is a powerful melody and vocal gymnastic. “My Open Arms” hides a simple pop melody underneath its smooth veneer. “Scar” has tough acoustic guitars pushing the somber points over the finish line. “Garden of Eden” adds bursts of electric guitars into the web of multi-tracked voices. Several of these songs are also featured on Turn The Tide and Walking On Sunshine.
