A fixture in reggaetón for over two decades, Alex Gárgolas typically drops volumes of his namesake series that largely stick to the ever-evolving genre’s boundaries. Yet with Gárgolas Forever, the Puerto Rican producer spends roughly a third of the album embracing a decidedly more electronic R&B style, one that straddles the classic and the contemporary. Notably, he accomplishes this task by working with Latin artists better known for perreo than such clubby tracks. “Amor Tóxico” with Lyanno and “Promesa” with Eladio Carrión evoke Weeknd-esque vibes, as does the more slowly paced “Forever” with Robi. But fans of Gárgolas’ prior works and of the artists featured here will still find a fair share of songs built on the foundation of dembow, including the laidback “Chilling” with De La Ghetto and the airy “Toda La Noche” with Rauw Alejandro. For the trap set, there’s the ferocious posse cut “Las Gárgolas” with Brray, Luar La L, and Mora, among others. Meanwhile, Arcángel serves disco funk feels on “Por La Ciudad,” one of the project’s most surprising cuts.
