When Brampton MC NorthSideBenji announced The Extravagant Collection on Instagram a few weeks ahead of the project’s arrival, he closed out the post with a statement acknowledging the years that had passed since 2019’s Caviar Dreams: “Let em Know We Back,” he wrote. “We Just Getting Started.” “Restarted” would’ve been a tad more accurate, but fans of Benji’s signature brand of sing-rapping were not likely complaining. Benji appearances since 2019’s Frienemy EP had been sparse—he popped up on Neena Rose’s electro-pop single “Secret” and also his own “30,000 ft”—but with The Extravagant Collection, one of the GTA’s most promising MCs is back in the saddle for a full 13 tracks. The project is all lifestyle, Benji using songs like “Money Showers,” “How Much She Needs Me,” “Problems to Millions,” and “Chess Not Checkers” to detail what DJ Khaled once termed “suffering from success,” giving his fans a wealth of insight into what the life of a trapper-turned-rapper entails in 2021. The project’s only credited guests are Harlem MC Melii and rising Houston-based singer-songwriter Vory, affirming that what Benji really thinks the game needs is more of his voice.
