Loyalty remains one of rap’s most reliable themes, with all manner of lyricist dwelling upon those who do them wrong often more so than those who hold them down. On Thru the Thunder, YSN Fab seems especially fixated on this subject, mostly but not exclusively in matters of the heart. The Winnipeg-bred rapper expresses an extreme wariness of the opposite sex on “Been Here Before” and “Soul Fly,” all the while still somewhat hopeful that the right woman will enter his life eventually. Even while suffering from success on “When It Gets Bad,” he still can’t seem to get past these prior betrayals, hardening his heart through to the cathartic closer “Rich Off My Notes.”
