With so much of the global population absorbing classic Walt Disney children's films, it isn't too much of an exaggeration to say that Dick Jones, billed in his youth as Dickie Jones, has a voice that has been heard around the world. After all, Jones worked the voice of Pinocchio in the original 1940 full-length cartoon. This means he obviously wasn't very good at telling a lie, at least when he was in character. What he was good at, besides acting, was stunt riding. Whether assisting Western stars such as Gene Autry or exploiting his own riding skills on screen, flashy activity involving horses was a recurring phenomenon throughout his career.
A native Texan, Jones began working as a child actor in films at around the age of eight. About a decade later, during the Second World War years, he appeared on radio, including doing the voice of Henry Aldrich on the popular Aldrich Family series. When television came along in the following decade, Jones found out that a guy who could handle horses was much in demand. He starred in a series entitled Buffalo Bill Jr. and also helped Jock Mahoney stay in the saddle as The Range Rider. A 1991 remastering of the Pinocchio soundtrack brings the listener the sound of Jones' squeaky voice in its full glory. In 2001 the actor was still up to the job of making guest appearances at events such as the Cambridge, OH, Hoppy Festival. ~ Eugene Chadbourne
