One of many Southern rock groups to hit the upper reaches of the charts during the late '70s, the Atlanta Rhythm Section initially formed as a house studio band from the ashes of Roy Orbison's backing group (the Candymen) and pop hitmakers Classics IV. Finding time between sessions to record their own original material, the group recorded often during the first half of the '70s. In 1976, the Atlanta Rhythm Section scored the Top Ten single "So into You." Even more successful was 1978's Top Ten album Champagne Jam, which spawned two hit singles ("I'm Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight" and "Imaginary Lover"). The band lasted several more years before splitting, but reunited sporadically for tours and recording. Additionally, some of country-rock's biggest names went on to record Atlanta Rhythm Section covers, including Travis Tritt, Wynonna Judd, and Charlie Daniels.
