Before Shania Twain’s rise in the mid-’90s, no other singer had combined two roles that, at the time, seemed entirely disparate: rootin’, tootin’ country star and glamorous pop diva. That she made it look so easy is a testament to the tenacity shown by the performer, who was born in 1965 and raised in the small Canadian town of Timmins, ON. After not gaining much headway during her early stint as a rock performer under her original name of Eilleen Twain, nor in her first years after becoming Shania and signing to Mercury Nashville, she made a fortuitous alliance with Robert John “Mutt” Lange. On Twain’s albums The Woman In Me (1995) and Come On Over (1997), her producer (and future husband) applied the skills he had learned making albums with AC/DC and Def Leppard to ensure that her country-pop confections had just as much impact as any arena-ready rocker. While the likes of “You’re Still The One” and “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” dominated dance floors and jukeboxes, “Forever and for Always” and other ballads showcased her warm contralto and became indispensable on wedding playlists. By the time she released her fourth album, Up!, in 2002, Twain was one of country music’s biggest-selling artists. Overcoming personal hardships such as voice and health problems that nearly silenced her as well as the end of her marriage to Lange, she again displayed her strength, as well as a new sense of vulnerability, on 2017’s Now. In early 2023 she released her sixth album, Queen of Me, a pop-country record that included the bouncy “Giddy Up!” and the pop-punk-infused “Waking Up Dreaming.” Twain returned to Las Vegas for her third residency there in the spring of 2024; that same year, she commanded the Sunday Legends slot at England’s historic Glastonbury Festival.
