Ava DuVernay made history as the first Black woman to win a Best Director award at Sundance (for Middle of Nowhere in 2012) and also as the first Black female director to be nominated for a Golden Globe (Selma). DuVernay created an exclusive playlist for Black History Month 2019 which she hopes will inspire Black creatives of tomorrow. “These are the songs by Black artists that have shaped and shifted me in so many ways,” DuVernay says. “This music has guided me both socially and spiritually, framing my feelings about everything from romance to respectability and responsibility. It's a real pleasure to have them all in one place.”
