Sainte-Foy, Quebec in Canada may not be an internationally recognised hip-hop epicentre, but local hero KenLo Craqnuques (a.k.a. KNLO) put it on the rap map with his breakthrough 2019 album, named after the Quebec City suburb. That album’s lead single, “Ça fait mal”, captures KNLO in his exuberant element, celebrating life and valourising struggle as he dances atop a skittering production that connects classic Afropop with modern Afrobeats. His CLUB Mixtape 2020 release kept the party going with dancehall-horn-blasted jams like “PLAFOND”, but stand-alone single “C’est Beau” sees him slip into R&B loverman mode with ease.
