Boldy James & Chuck Strangers
Token of Appreciation
Album · Hip-Hop/Rap · 2025
Very few rappers were as prolific and efficient in 2024 as Boldy James, with the Detroit lyricist dropping three brilliant single-producer albums over the year. He’s exceeding that pace in 2025, with February’s Token of Appreciation already clocking in as his third record of the year. It feels like he’ll find the right pocket over anybody’s beats at this point, but that doesn’t mean that producer Chuck Strangers (of Joey Bada$$’s Brooklyn collective Pro Era) takes his job any less seriously. His foggy, subdued sounds are the perfect backdrop for Boldy’s ominous street stoicism.
“Thank God” equips Boldy with a vocal sample of the song’s title that he cleverly weaves throughout the lyrics, spitting threats and gratitude in the same breath. “UPS” finds Chuck inventively pairing a piano run with haunting organs, with Boldy flipping flows throughout. “Streets need Boldy/More shooters than the League Pass, put on my ski mask/In real life, shit makin’ me feel like the ’03 Kobe,” he nimbly raps on “Big Paws on a Puppy.” Boldy is as witty, vivid, and heartless as ever, and fans’ playlists are all the better for it.
