A J-pop take on the Menudo style of running a pop group, Morning Musume formed in 1997 when mastermind, producer, and manager Tsunku challenged the group by agreeing to work with them only if they were able to sell 50,000 copies of their demo -- on their own, with television help, of course -- in five days. The group succeeded, and released its first single, "Morning Coffee," in 1998, followed by their first album, First Time, later that year. In 1999, the group experienced what was to become one of the hallmarks of Morning Musume: frequent roster changes.
