A sharp and thoughtful artist lurking beneath the surface of a sunny, playful chanteuse, Nellie McKay is a singer and songwriter whose style is inspired by vintage jazz and vocal pop, with occasional dashes of indie rock and hip-hop, and pointed satirical observations. McKay's debut, 2004's Get Away from Me, was a critical favorite, but her insistence on doing things her own way led to her being dropped by her record label. (In 2025, McKay released her original demos on the LP Gee Whiz: The Get Away from Me Demos.) Despite this, McKay continued to write and record on her own terms for a variety of imprints, earning praise for her songwriting while later demonstrating her skills as an interpretive vocalist. McKay showed that her songwriting chops were still in fine shape on 2023's Hey Guys, Watch This, her first set of original songs in 13 years.
