AfroToniQ has evolved with South Africa's house music scene, adapting his style to suit the zeitgeist. At his core, the Qwaqwa native is a house producer, but he created gqom music in the mid-2010s when the subgenre, which originated in Durban, was in vogue. Toward the end of the decade and into the 2020s, he began experimenting with the amapiano sound, a subgenre of South African dance music that's become a staple for the country's dance floors. His crafting with The Yanos led to the 2020 fan-favorite "Fohloza," a song in which he cranks up amapiano's traditional log drum and washes it with strings and synths. In 2021, AfroToniQ received the ultimate cosign from South African house music superstar Prince KayBee when he referred to him as the "hottest DJ/producer in the Free State right now."
