The initial concept of Arizing was the brainchild of four close friends from the Detroit area who wished to create original music that harked back to their musical influences without seeming overly identical. These four musicians, Jason Revoir on guitar and backing vocals, Nick Chmiel on guitar and handling lead vocals, Ryan Brukwinski on drums, and Shane Thomas on bass, formed in January of 1998. In what was to become a common occurrence, vocalist Chmiel departed from the group after only their first few shows, and was quickly replaced by singer/pianist Brandon Jump in the spring of 1998, who shortly thereafter was also replaced. Wayne Parks filled the role of vocalist in June of 1998, which also marked the band's induction to the local Detroit underground scene.
After another lineup change in August of 1998, which found Parks departing and Jason Revoir's friend John Miller joining the flock, Arizing released their first single, "Bike," which went on to sell a modest amount for a local band and helped the young group find their niche in the burgeoning Detroit independent scene. Around the same time, the band welcomed second guitarist Dennis Klein (formerly of Lyger) into the group, and by February of 1999 Arizing had released their first three-song demo, including a reworked version of "Bike." Unfortunately, Arizing hit yet another roadblock in March of 1999 as Miller left the band due to financial obligations.
Jason Revoir inevitably laid down his guitar and stepped up to the mic in an effort to give Arizing some much-needed stability, and Revoir's childhood friend Bryan Adams was welcomed into the group to fill the opening Revoir left behind on guitar. Now a five-piece, Arizing once again began playing shows and working on new material, releasing the Little Yellow Different EP in May of 1999. They spent the rest of 1999 diligently performing live, and gained the attention of local independent label Medea Records. Just as Arizing began serious negotiations with Medea Records, bassist Shane Thomas abruptly quit. Nick Steadman joined the group in February of 2000, and his addition found Arizing moving in a new musical direction.
Arizing signed to Medea Records on Easter Sunday of 2000, and spent the rest of the year writing and recording, yet also performing at the 2000 Milwaukee Metalfest. By January 1st, their debut full-length, Womb, was completed, yet fate spread its wings and in February of 2001 frontman Jason Revoir and guitarist Bryan Adams leave the band due to personal issues. At this time, Arizing's three remaining members were left with a full album, a respectable reputation in the Detroit area, and a difficult task ahead of them to replace integral parts of the band. The group relocated to New Baltimore and recruited guitarist John Pregler in August of 2001, as they continued writing new material. Also in that same month, Matt Dalton, a close friend of the group and vocalist of labelmates LeFT, chose to rehearse with the band. After much controversy and some bitter words, Dalton assumed the role of vocalist for Arizing in September of 2001. With a new-found desire to succeed, Arizing spent the remainder of the year recording new material and playing numerous shows. Dalton re-recorded vocals for the delayed Womb, and it was released in March of 2002. Drawing comparisons to the Deftones, Far, and Failure, Arizing continued touring, performing alongside such notable acts as Taproot, Factory 81, Nothingface, Relative Ash, and Stuck Mojo, as well as part of the Vans Warped Tour in Detroit; and in the fall of 2002 began recording their new four-song EP, Wishflower. ~ Jason D.
