This English vocalist is most famous for a series of roles created specifically for him in contemporary works by Sir Michael Tippett, Maxwell Davies, Hans Werner Henze, and others. One of the bass and baritone's prime achievements has been singing the role of the White Abbot in the Covent Garden production of the Davies opera Taverner, which he has performed in both the '70s and the '80s. He also created the part of the Governor in Henze's We Come to the River and Faber in Tippett's Knot Garden. Nonetheless this artist came out of a completely traditional background, making his debut as Figaro in Mozart's warhorse opera in 1950. Since that time his range has continued to be as deep as his voice itself. He has sung in the production of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas with the English Chamber Orchestra, which has continued to be his most widely distributed and longest-available commercial recording. He hacked his way through the part of The Cougher in Gerald Hoffnung's humorous short piece of the same name, but is also known as one of the superior interpreters of Bach's vocal works.
Herincx studied with Giovanni Valli, Van Dyck, Vida Harford, and Samuel Worthington. He is a professor at the Royal Academy of Music and the North East of Scotland Music School.
