As an anonymous artist who mostly makes his brand of ’90s-inspired shoegaze and post-rock alone at his computer, Parannoul likes to let the music speak for itself. But as a central figure in Seoul’s growing indie-rock scene—and as a musician who’s averaged two new albums every year since 2021—that intentional obscurity isn’t likely to last too long. On the propulsive “Beautiful World” and “White Ceiling,” both from 2021’s To See the Next Part of the Dream, Parannoul buries their vocals in a haze of feedback and effects, even while holding tightly to a floating sense of melody. “Polaris” and “We Shine at Night,” skyward-looking tracks from 2023’s After the Magic, further embraced a tuneful musicality. By the time Parannoul released 2024’s Sky Hundred, tracks such as “Painless” and “Gold River” had indicated a move toward not just a noisier sound but a new level of emotional rawness.
