Founded in New York in 2005 by Chinese-American producer Dave Liang, The Shanghai Restoration Project is a Barcelona-based electronic fusion duo—visual artist Sun Yunfan joined Liang after arriving in New York by way of Shaanxi and Shenzhen. As their name suggests, the act’s distinctive blend of R&B, jazz and traditional Chinese genres over unconventional hip-hop and electronic beats is often concerned with Shanghai, especially the standards of the city’s golden era. But the duo also explore a more international flavour on Life Elsewhere and meditate on mechanised futures in 2017 album R.U.R.. And their search for inspiration has taken them toward Afrobeats and amapiano on tracks like the Tebza Majaivane collab “Second Childhood”.
