The Damned were the first U.K. punk band to release a single and an album, and the first to tour America, but never achieved the same level of success or respect as Sex Pistols or The Clash. Their anarchic comic streak may have undercut bids for respect, though it was also one of their best qualities and set them apart from the rest of the mostly humorless scene. They also boasted a terrific leading duo in singer Dave Vanian and guitarist Captain Sensible, who guided the band through several hits before their popularity waned.
