Few solo artists change direction as often as Bill Ryder-Jones, who first served as long-standing lead guitarist with Liverpudlian psych rockers The Coral. His 2011 debut solo album, If…, plunged headlong into classical music, recruiting the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic for an invented score to an Italo Calvino novel. Then 2013's A Bad Wind Blows in My Heart nailed intimate folk and piano ballads, while 2015's West Kirby County Primary swung back to The Coral's brooding dreaminess, with detours into Pavement's crooked melodicism. No matter how drastic the leap, he always sticks the landing.
