The literate, impassioned indie pop of The Go-Betweens was accurately dubbed “that striped sunlight sound” in the '80s. The Australian group featured two mercurial songwriters—Robert Forster provided angular pop with arch lyrics (“Spring Rain,” “Head Full of Steam”) while Grant McLennan crafted poetic paeans to memory (“Cattle and Cane”) and hopeful romanticism (“Bachelor Kisses”). The off-kilter drumming of Lindy Morrison and cascading violin and oboe of Amanda Brown colored much of their catalog with a golden glow that continues to radiate in like-minded groups Teenage Fanclub and Belle and Sebastian.
