Japanese director Shunji Iwai concludes his time as Guest Curator of the Month with selections that illustrate his love for Edvard Grieg and show how the Norwegian composer influences his own compositions. According to Iwai, it is rare to find music that is as concisely expressive as Grieg's. “Words like lyrical, sentimental, idyllic and nostalgic fall short of expressing Grieg's melodies," Iwai says, “When I myself compose, Grieg's collection of Lyric Pieces serves as a pattern. That is how much I like him, but I had only used his works once before in a movie. That was I hjemmet (In My Homeland). It may not sound special, but the melody is difficult to recreate. Infusing a film with such music delivers an indescribable flavour."
