Waa Wei’s Have a Nice Day: What’s This Thing Called Love?
Playlist - 25 Songs
Love. It’s a word poets have struggled to define throughout history. And yet, it’s a word, and a feeling, that we instantly understand. “Love is so difficult to describe,” Waa Wei tells Apple Music. "When you’re happy, everything’s completely fuzzy and you lose your judgment. When love is over and sad, you’ll want to cry along with some sad songs. So love is something I don’t know how to describe. It can be very small or very big, very obscured and very specific.” She explores these nuances in “很小很小” (“Teeny-Tiny”), the closing track on her seventh album, Have A Nice Day, and she explores it further in this handmade playlist. Wei has selected indie-pop and lo-fi tracks that are emotionally nuanced and truly speak to her about love and everything it means. You’ll find singers like beabadoobee, Biig Piig and Bruno Major, whose voice "just gives people that feeling like they’re falling in love,” she says. She further conveys love’s kaleidoscopic nature with the carnivalesque rapture of Early Sans (“Easy Love”), the longing falsetto of keshi (“Drunk”) and the playful vulnerability of Hether (“Shy”). “Actually, the song names themselves in the playlist all have to do with love,” she says.
Wei has also included a track of her own—“我的菜” (“My Type”), a collab with Kaohsiung rap group Shadow Project on which she shows her adventurous side. “I finally fulfilled a little wish of mine to rap in my song,” she says. “I interviewed the Shadow Project on the radio during the time I was rushing to get my album done. So I just asked them: ‘You want to collaborate?’” There’s also flirtatious tracks from strongboi (“Honey Thighs”) and Katzù Oso (“Kiss U Better”), and a reminder to save some love for ourselves with Haiva Ru’s (“Oh, But Lover”). But her playlist closer—Johnny Hartman and John Coltrane’s 1963 classic “You Are Too Beautiful”—is the choice of a true romantic. “I feel that love is a gamble, because you really don't know what it will become,” says Wei.
