Hyun Sook puts a funky spin on the traditional trot sound. The South Korean singer has been active since the late ‘70s, and many of her songs forge a middle ground between classic trot and Western styles of the era. The upbeat “춤추는 템버린” (“Dancing Tambourine”) superimposes trot's distinct two-step rhythm onto a four-on-the-floor disco beat, while adding the swirling violins common to both genres. Her distinct raspy voice is well-suited for styles like rock ‘n' roll and Motown soul, but she brings plenty of emotion to country, folk, and ballads, too.
