While his 2010 self-titled debut won Quebec’s Félix Award for contemporary folk album of the year, it was clear that Jimmy Hunt was no ordinary singer/songwriter. Even on a busker-ready ditty like “Everything Crash,” Hunt performed with a swagger and verve that owed as much to glam rock as folk music. But his 2013 follow-up, Maladie d’amour, heralded the emergence of a true auteur: On the divine “Nos corps,” Hunt delivers his minimalist lyrics in an aching higher register atop an ambient synth mist and string-spiked disco groove. Coming off an extended hiatus, 2020’s Le silence resumed his pursuit of an increasingly expansive art-pop vision.
