It’s no coincidence that Taylor Moss’s 2024 debut album is called Firecracker. “It’s a description I get all the time,” the self-possessed, flame-haired country artist told Apple Music at the time. Moss had already made a name for herself by then, thanks to 2020’s boot-stomping rocker “Ain’t No Girly Girl” and the sassy kiss-off “Ghosted” two years later. Yet, Moss wanted to capture the full range of her personal experience on that first album, which she co-wrote with her best friend, singer-songwriter Alys Ffion. So after touching on her upbringing in the Australian country town of Ulladulla and saluting other strong female singers like Shania Twain and Avril Lavigne on “The Women Who Raised Me,” she devoted the remaining tracks to contrasting a long string of romantic disappointments with the story of meeting her partner, The Wolfe Brothers drummer David Ruberto. In the latter camp is “Dream Baby,” an anthem steeped in 1980s pop/rock that Moss calls “the most unapologetic love song.” But one listen to its belting chorus and it’s clear that Moss has surrendered none of her firecracker energy since discovering romantic fulfillment.
