Painstaking attention to detail lies at the heart of Big Scary. The Melbourne act started out humbly enough as a folky guitar/drums duo before Tom Iansek studied audio engineering and began applying more inventive techniques to his home-studio creations with Joanna Syme. After the scrappy garage pop of their 2008 debut single “The Apple Song,” Big Scary quickly grew more soulful and sophisticated, earning the Australian Music Prize for their 2013 album Not Art and showing off their knack for chopped-up melodies and rhythms on that record’s swooning single “Luck Now.” The pair eventually earned gold certification for 2016’s bubbling “The Opposite of Us,” another intimate intersection of meticulous arrangements and emotional clarity. Both members sing on 2022’s whisper-soft ballad “Devotion,” while 2024’s “Something to Remember” retreats into synth-warmed quietude before Syme’s drums enter the frame to usher in an array of new textures. As always with this duo, every little sonic detail is employed in the service of creating a song that couldn’t have come from anyone else.
