Emo may have emerged from the mid-’80s hardcore scene, but in the ensuing decades, it’s grown into the mainstream while absorbing all manner of other genres along the way. Fomenting around DC’s Dischord Records, bands such as Rites Of Spring, Dag Nasty, and Jawbox mixed scrappy guitars and throttling drums with lyrics that reflected a sense of vulnerability and emotion not typically associated with punk and rock. But emo would quickly evolve through the ’90s, its rapid-fire punk convention giving way to the complex, progressive instrumentation of Illinois’ Cap’n Jazz, New York’s Texas is the Reason, and Texas’ At the Drive-In. As the style shifted more toward melody in the early 2000s, acts such as Jimmy Eat World and Dashboard Confessional made inroads toward the mainstream. Emo’s evolution only continued, with My Chemical Romance, Panic! At the Disco, and Paramore infusing theatricality and pop sensibility into the genre, broadening its appeal while underscoring its propensity to adapt.
