until I heard it beating, my heart had reached the other side

love shot me from a canon, I heard the cracking of my bones

the earth’s star was dawning upon the creatures of the sky

I passed the church’s awnings, and the swallows and the crows

they were feeding on the crickets and calling to the people down below

above the cedar trees and concrete and the intercity trains

out on coast above the listing boats, I saw the seekers seek in vain

I saw the arc of human history, I saw the consuls of Rome

and the general in his wheelchair gripping his staff like stone

I was flying like a comet, I lost sight of any ground

I used to know my measures, but I’m untethered now

oh interstellar dust, fly where you must
