The final installment of Dr. John's early Night Tripper trilogy opens with some of his most otherworldly swamp funk. His voodoo runs strong in "Loop Garoo," accrues an earthy neighborhood feel in "Wash, Mama, Wash," and explodes into the shouting, chanting exorcism of "Mardi Gras Day." Side two of the original vinyl consists entirely of "Angola Anthem," a chain-rattling, percussion-heavy, and utterly sobering reflection of life in Louisiana's infamous state penitentiary.
