Michael Nesmith

Many have called Michael Nesmith a genius. The majority of his post-Monkees work barely sold, but he became a kind of fringe artist who managed to galvanize musical trends (country-rock, music videos, etc.) without being simplistic or superfluous. This 2005 solo album takes a hard left turn, incorporating atmospherics, orchestrations, and soundtrack-worthy songs (with and without vocals) that work together as conceptual journey of Nez’s life. It requires close listens to hear the distinct personalities in the tunes. Nez obviously left it up to the listener to decide whether the album is ironic. It rewards either way.
