Rain & Pocket Change
Album - Alternative, Music, Singer/Songwriter
On Rain & Pocket Change, Joel Willoughby takes on the role of a spiritual pilgrim, journeying through (mostly) bleak landscapes in search of renewed faith. This seven-song EP is a worthy follow-up to the Canadian singer/songwriter’s 2008 debut album. Willoughby’s lyrics depict life’s lonesome spaces, both those found on the map and within the heart. The brooding “Dead End Town” and the bubbly “Giving It Away” are piercing glimpses of 21st-century alienation and corruption. “Museums and Churches” seeks to penetrate the stony facades of religion, while “Mercy” is a humble declaration of reverence. Though these songs are a bit inwardly directed, Willoughby does reach out to the pop market on the jangling “Hazelnut Moon.” Jonathan Anderson’s production gives these tracks a pleasingly quirky bent, mixing techno beats with banjos, cellos and other acoustic touches. Overall, Rain & Pocket Change compensates for its brevity with artful, deeply felt tunes and intriguing sonic textures.
