Maura Kennedy’s first solo album, 2010’s Parade of Echoes, sounds nothing like her folk-tinged work with her husband in the Kennedys. On her solo debut, the Syracuse-born singer taps her young love for rock ‘n’ roll in all its colorful incarnations. “Chains,” “Time Will Steal Your Heart” and “Just the Rain “ feature Kennedy’s notable voice in its roughest terrain to date: driving guitars, a dense wall of sound with pure rock percussion keeping things moving along. “October,” like much of the album, broods with a fancy, ornate production more expected on a modern-rock album than that of a folk hero. The extra instrumentation and production leads to mostly dark places where Kennedy’s voice serves as the light guiding things to the other side. The pressure cooker of “Some Kind of Life,” the Buddy Holly jangle of “Make It Last” and the acoustic lilt of “Shadows With the Lonely” prove Kennedy is a formidable solo act with many tricks yet to play.
