Field Report
Album - Alternative, Music, Rock, Adult Alternative, Roots Rock, Country, Alternative Country, Indie Rock
This is an impressive debut. Field Report plays sparse folk rock with a subtle cathartic power. The band was started by Chris Porterfield, a singer/songwriter who was a member of DeYarmond Edison with Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and Phil Cook, Brad Cook, and Joe Westerlund (Megafaun). In retrospect, that short-lived Eau Claire, Wis., outfit now looks like an indie-folk supergroup. Field Report shares some similarities with the music of Porterfield’s former bandmates, but the group has definitely honed its own sound. Playing keyboards, bass, guitars, drums, and pedal steel, the members make a virtue of playing quietly. This elegant instrumentation is perfectly attuned to Porterfield’s relaxed, understated delivery. The lyrics are often dazzling in their vivid details, rich narratives, and character sketches. “Fergus Falls” and “I Am Not Waiting Anymore” stand out immediately. Others, such as “Taking Alcatraz,” “Incommunicado,” and “Captain Video,” unfold slowly and beg another listen. Rewarding and mysterious, this is beautiful piece of work.
