The guys in Daytona joined the hordes of indie musicians moving to Brooklyn, the world’s hippest borough—leaving North Carolina behind and mining multi-culti New York City to fuel their brand of worldly pop music. It’s hard not to mention Vampire Weekend, so we’ll get that out of the way now: they share not just a city with that Manhattan group but a passion for polyrhythmic, bubbling guitars and vocals that infuse Afro- and Amerindie pop with Caribbean sparkle. Airy guitar notes on “Lighthouse” move as fleetingly as the thunking, hollow percussive bits that drive the song. Billowing vocals on “The Road” are an emphatic invitation to explore, and the shifting flow of “Honey” is led by acoustic strumming and fingerpicking, glistening atop a sinewy, undulant backbeat. Daytona has that summer-afternoon feel, but there's also an autumnal gravity to some tunes, like the plaintive and folky “Ought to Be a Law” and the lonely-sounding, organ-inflected “Oregon.”
