Born Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe in 2002 in Cotonou, Benin, Ayra Starr immediately established herself as one of the strongest and most distinctive voices on the alternative side of Afrobeats with her 2021 single “Away.” Her fearlessly honest lyrics embedded in digitized takes on Yoruban and Beninese rhythms typified the burgeoning sound of alté while also pushing it forward. On record, the singer and songwriter is effortlessly smooth and perfectly timed, infusing her delivery with cosmopolitan edginess. Unbothered in her demeanor, the former model, known for her fashion-forward looks, has cultivated an inimitable persona to match her soulful voice. Songs such as the international smash hit “Rush” showcase her ability to come off reflective and sultry in a single song, calling to mind legendary stylists such as Sade.
