Nelson Bean, a Seattle-based artist known as Black Hat, produces experimental electronic music that builds complex rhythms over expansive drones. While some of his work is bleak and intense enough to be likened to industrial, some of his other material is brighter and more vivid, coming closer to IDM. There's also a heavy bass element to his music, which can prove to be punishing in a live context. Bean grew up in Oakland, California but moved to Seattle after college, and began the Black Hat project in 2012, after the band he was playing bass in didn't work out. He self-released his debut EP, Spectral Disorder, that year, and Debacle Records re-released it. The second Black Hat EP, Covalence, appeared on Field Hymns in 2013. Thought of Two, a full-length containing three lengthy, hypnotic pieces, was issued by Hausu Mountain in 2014, and received acclaim from several publications. The Dream Interlock cassette soon followed on Digitalis Limited, and Debacle's techno sublabel Motor released Black Hat's Willow 12" in 2015. Bean returned to Hausu Mountain in 2017 with the 70-minute cassette Impossible World. ~ Paul Simpson
